Formed in 1992 as the Kids Oncology and Leukaemia Action Group, KOALA Foundation is run by parents and carers of children who are being, or have been treated for cancer.
KOALA Foundation is run entirely on a voluntary basis, all administration support is donated and there are no staff, so 100% of any net funds raised go to the care and support of our kids with cancer.
KOALA Foundation's work is threefold:
- Family support
- Lobbying for world class services and resources
- Funding for world class services and resources
KOALA Foundation coordinates and works with the Victorian Government's Paediatric Integrated Cancer Services at the Children's Cancer Centre, Monash Medical Centre, Royal Children's Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. KOALA Foundation also collaborates and works cooperatively with all major cancer support groups.
KOALA Foundation's Constitution allows for only the proceeds of the Capital Fund to be put towards the direct care and support of our kids with cancer. The more the Capital Fund grows, the more support can be provided each year from the Fund's proceeds. This way the hospitals and clinical resources involved with paediatric oncology treatment and the community of patients and carers, have an ongoing financial partner to assist them, not just a one-off fundraising venture.
As stated, KOALA Foundation is run by the parents of past and current patients. There is no one better to know what support is needed and where it is needed. These parents oversee KOALA Foundation's funds allocation in collaboration with the hospitals involved.
Importantly, KOALA Foundation's efforts are focused on lobbying the government and hospitals to maximise their support of paediatric oncology and haematology treatment and care. This means KOALA Foundation's funding is adding value to, not substituting hospital funding.
